This COP, we’ve called upon all countries to commit to a ban on sales of polluting vehicles.
The pre-existing commitments
The interactive map below shows that some countries have already made commitments to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles, prior to COP26. Hover over a country to see more details.
The new commitments
This map shows the new commitments agreed to COP26, and it will be updated as more information is received.
“Clarity about the transition to electric vehicles is vital to businesses, investors and consumers who need to plan and allocate capital. The simplest way to do that is for governments to commit to a date to phase out the sale of polluting cars, and we have been calling on governments to take these sensible and timely steps at COP26.
“Today’s announcement is a significant step in the right direction. We estimate that the portion of the global car market covered by a commitment to phase out petrol and diesel cars has increased by 50% as a result.
“There remains more to be done - and we encourage every country that did not sign this commitment, in particular Germany, the USA and China, to set a date to end the sale of polluting cars. Doing so would be a sensible act of enlightened self interest.”

How we did it…
We used data from a variety of sources to create this data tool. We’re constantly working to improve it, and would love to hear your views - email us on data@newautomotive.org.
Terminology
In general, whenever we refer to ‘EVs’ or ‘electric vehicles’, we mean purely electric vehicles, not hybrids.
Data requests
If you would like access to the data we’ve used to make this, or to find out more about how we did it, we’d love to hear from you. Email us on data@newautomotive.org.
Methodology
Data Sources
We obtained data from Carsalesbase and Statista, as well as publications such as Focus2Move, InsideEVs, NADA, and WCAX - in instances where statistics were not readily available.
Sales data was found for each country combining both passenger vehicle sales with light commercial vehicle sales. These estimates were cross checked for reliability and combined to give estimates of how many vehicle sales would be included in these phase-out plans.
