China has leapfrogged countries with vehicle manufacturing pedigrees to become a huge maker and buyer of EVs, developed by domestic manufacturers, who now plan to expand internationally. China has implemented aggressive policies, including a ‘New Energy Vehicle’ mandate, a strong CO2 regulation, tax incentives for individuals, and investment in public infrastructure. This has resulted in them becoming the largest, by volume purchaser of EVs and this is likely to remain the case for years to come.

EVs in China are popular - their main challenge is the export of EVs, where they face opposition from governments, and have yet to make a significant dent in markets such as the EU.
