Singapore's unique car culture, with tight state control of new vehicle registrations, means a motorist will spend upward of $90K for a compact sedan, in addition to bidding for a market variable registration to drive. Due to these high taxes, Singapore has had the leverage to offer significant tax cuts to EVs with little actual government expenditure.
Due to this proactive approach the Singaporean government has attracted OEMs' attention and - despite not having a history of vehicle manufacturing- was chosen by Hyundai to open a plant in the country producing their E-IONIQs.
