The sale of new electric cars rose by 60% year-on-year in April, as Britons continue to flock to make the switch to cheaper, greener electric transport. Around 16% of all new cars were electric. Across all fuel types, the new car market grew by roughly 10% overall, continuing the steady recovery that began in February, with this growth largely being driven by a 60% increase in new EV registrations.

In March, electric cars accounted for 16.21% of all new car registrations in the UK, as the exponential growth in EV uptake seen in recent years begins to stabilise. While demand for electric vehicles is  still high, it is likely that slower rates of growth will continue until the ZEV Mandate is implemented in 2024, and supply is able to consistently match consumer demand.

Electric vans share of the Uk’s van market held steady in March, with 5% of all new registrations being fully electric. New electric registrations continue to be buoyed by commercial fleets taking advantage of the grants still available for businesses looking to make the switch. This month, Royal Mail took delivery of 82 e-vans at its Mansfield depot, and Bury council has added 15 new e-vans to its fleet. Those businesses who choose an electric van tend to keep them; according to Arval UK 90% of businesses which obtain an e-van using their medium term rental option choose to keep them at the end of their lease.

While February 2023 was not a bumper month for electric van uptake compared to February last year, the market for e-vans remained stable at 5%. E-vans are still the second most popular choice for consumers, behind Diesel. If electric is to make up ground on diesels dominance of the market, the government must do more to ensure motorists are empowered to make the switch and access the running cost savings e-van offer

The number of new electric car sales grew by 16% year-on-year in February, despite electric’s overall share of the market falling slightly. The overall number of new car registrations increased as the new car market showed the first marked signs of recovery since late last year. Unfortunately, it was not just new electric registrations driving this growth - new petrol sales, alongside new hybrid sales, were also up, helping to drive the uptick of the market.

British motorists are driving fewer miles, in the new post-pandemic normal. The average annual mileage in the UK was just under 5,400 miles in 2021. Despite this, figures suggest that the transport sector is still the biggest single contributor to the UK’s total carbon emissions output.

Once again, December was a very strong month for new electric car sales, recording their highest ever market share.
