Introduction

This spreadsheet shows total car sales in the UK in the relevant month, broken down by the manufacturer, brand and fuel type.

Methodology & Explanation Data sources We obtain the data from the DVLA's publicly available vehicle enquiry service API, and the DVSA's MOT history API. These APIs provide access to the vehicle licensing database, which is the record of all licensed vehicles in the UK. The database is updated in near real time, and we refresh our data monthly to obtain the previous months' new registrations. The data we display covers all cars with a standard GB and NI registration mark. It does not capture any newly registered vehicles with personalised or non-standard registration plates. We display newly registered 'M1' vehicles, i.e. passenger cars.

Fuel Types

Fuel types are based on information available from the DVLA. To determine whether a car is a plug-in hybrid or full hybrid (non-plug-in), we use information about the engine size and fuel consumption ratings to make an estimate. The fuel types we list are:
BEV: Battery electric vehicle
Petrol: Purely petrol-powered
Diesel: Purely diesel-powered
HEV: hybrids not capable of being plugged in to charge
PHEV: plug-in hybrid electric vehicle
Other: niche or small volume fuel types, such as LPG, hydrogen or steam (!)
